Some entrepreneurs build successful businesses. Others build institutions that continue creating opportunities long after the founder steps away. The difference lies not only in vision but in purpose. While businesses generate value, institutions shape societies, empower generations, and become part of a nation’s development story. It is this philosophy that has defined the remarkable journey of Fatima Diallo (Jallow), Founder and Group CEO of Think Mina Limited, whose career has been driven by a determination to create platforms that empower people, strengthen communities, and tell Africa’s story with authenticity. Over nearly two decades, Fatima has built an impressive record as an entrepreneur, event strategist, communications professional, and community leader. Yet her greatest contribution extends beyond the businesses she has established. Through leadership initiatives, women’s empowerment programmes, diaspora engagement, and institution building, she has consistently demonstrated that entrepreneurship can be one of Africa’s most effective tools for creating lasting social and economic change. Her story is one of vision, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to service. It is also the story of a leader who recognised that success is not measured solely by personal achievement but by the opportunities created for others.
WHERE VISION BEGINS
Every enduring legacy begins with a vision. For Fatima Diallo, that vision was shaped by a life between The Gambia and the Bronx, New York City, where she developed a global outlook while remaining deeply connected to her Fulani heritage and African identity. Living between two worlds gave her a unique appreciation of the opportunities available to Africans abroad and the immense potential that exists across the continent. Rather than weakening her ties to Africa, those experiences strengthened her resolve to contribute to its future. Long before becoming an entrepreneur, she envisioned building platforms that would celebrate African culture, nurture leadership, and create opportunities for others. That purpose would shape every stage of her career.
BUILDING PLATFORMS THAT EMPOWER
Fatima’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2008 with the launch of Miss Guinea USA, a platform created to promote leadership, education, confidence, cultural pride, and service rather than conventional pageantry. Although it carried the name Miss Guinea USA, it quickly evolved into a gathering place for Africans from The Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and many other countries, becoming a celebration of African unity and identity. Beyond the annual competition, the initiative supported educational outreach in Guinea through donations of school supplies, mentorship programmes, and leadership development for young women. Fatima also helped contestants gain international exposure by supporting Guinea’s participation in regional competitions, including the Miss West Africa pageant in Ghana, reflecting her belief that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and nations. The success of Miss Guinea USA established Fatima as one of the leading African event organisers in the United States. She later supported the development of Miss Senegal USA, Miss Burkina Faso USA, Miss Côte d’Ivoire USA, Miss Nigeria USA, Miss Ghana USA, and Miss Gambia USA, while also serving as one of the pioneering judges of the Miss Interstate Pageant in New Jersey. In 2012, she expanded her vision by founding the Calabash Awards, an initiative recognising outstanding achievements within the African community in the United States. Although awaiting relaunch, the awards remain part of her long-term commitment to celebrating African excellence.
CONNECTING THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
As her influence grew, Fatima expanded into entrepreneurship, leadership, and community development, organising women’s empowerment conferences, leadership forums, networking events, and business initiatives across New York, Ohio, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and Texas. Among her most notable achievements was the African Diaspora Conference, which brought together political leaders, diplomats, entrepreneurs, business executives, academics, and community leaders to explore entrepreneurship, investment, education, and Africa’s future. The conference reflected her belief that the African diaspora possesses the knowledge, experience, and networks needed to accelerate the continent’s development. She also organised the Beauty & Brain Conference at the Permanent Mission of Guinea to the United Nations, encouraging women and girls to pursue education, leadership, and professional excellence while challenging outdated stereotypes. Her advocacy later earned her the opportunity to speak at a United Nations programme on innovative education and the empowerment of women and girls. Beyond business, Fatima served organisations including the African Advisory Council of the Bronx, the United African Coalition, and the African Day Parade, strengthening African representation in civic life. Her contributions earned widespread recognition for entrepreneurship, mentorship, leadership, and community service, establishing her as one of the leading voices of the African diaspora.
RETURNING HOME WITH PURPOSE
After building a successful career in the United States, Fatima made the deliberate decision to return to The Gambia. It was not a move driven by necessity, but by a conviction that the knowledge, experience, and networks she had built abroad could create meaningful opportunities at home. Her ambition extended beyond launching another company. She envisioned building institutions that would generate employment, strengthen entrepreneurship, develop local talent, and contribute to national development. That vision would soon become Think Mina Limited, the cornerstone of a much larger ambition to build an African business ecosystem capable of creating opportunities far beyond the borders of The Gambia.
BUILDING THINK MINA
In 2019, Fatima transformed her vision into reality by founding Think Mina Limited, a company built on innovation, strategic communications, business development, marketing, public relations, recruitment, event management, and social impact. More than a communications firm, Think Mina was established to help organisations strengthen their brands, expand their reach, and contribute to national development. Within a few years, the company had become one of The Gambia’s leading communications and business development firms, delivering projects for governments, multinational corporations, development partners, international organisations, and private sector clients. Its portfolio includes Air France, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Wave Mobile Money, APS, GTSC, Blue Finn Fisheries, Unique Group, Facil Clothing, and Tropic Shopping Centre, reflecting the trust placed in its ability to deliver high quality solutions. A defining milestone came when Think Mina became the first woman-owned company in The Gambia to secure a major contract with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Leading communications, branding, and market development initiatives for women in the fisheries sector, the company demonstrated that African women-owned businesses can successfully deliver large-scale international development projects.
CREATING OPPORTUNITIES THAT TRANSFORM LIVES
For Fatima, Think Mina’s greatest achievement is not its client portfolio but the opportunities it has created for others. Since its establishment, the company has recruited, managed, and created employment opportunities for nearly 1,000 young Gambians, while raising professional standards through mentorship, staff development, and advocacy for better remuneration within the marketing industry. Its contribution extends beyond employment. Through responsible corporate governance, Think Mina has contributed more than GMD 30 million in taxes and statutory payments, reinforcing Fatima’s belief that successful businesses should create value not only for shareholders but also for society.
BUILDING AN AFRICAN BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM
Fatima’s ambition has always extended beyond building a single company. Today, Think Mina Limited serves as the parent company of Think Mina Media (TMM), dedicated to amplifying African voices through documentaries, television, and digital media, and PROAID Services Recruitment, a workforce solutions company connecting talent with opportunity. These ventures are the foundation of a broader vision to build one of Africa’s leading business ecosystems by integrating communications, media, recruitment, education, entrepreneurship, events, and investment. Rather than pursuing growth for its own sake, Fatima is creating institutions designed to generate employment, strengthen businesses, and contribute to Africa’s long-term prosperity.
LOOKING AHEAD
For Fatima Diallo, success has never been measured solely by revenue or recognition. It is measured by lives transformed, young people employed, women empowered, businesses strengthened, and communities connected. Her vision reaches far beyond The Gambia. She sees Think Mina evolving into an African institution that builds partnerships across the continent, empowers entrepreneurs, creates employment, and tells African stories through an authentic African lens. By investing in talent, innovation, and entrepreneurship, she believes Africa can build globally competitive businesses while unlocking the full potential of its people.
Fatima Diallo’s journey demonstrates that entrepreneurship achieves its greatest purpose when it creates opportunities for others. Through nearly two decades of leadership, she has shown that lasting impact is measured not by the number of companies built but by the institutions created, the communities strengthened, and the lives transformed. As Africa looks increasingly to entrepreneurs to drive economic growth and innovation, leaders like Fatima are redefining success through service, purpose, and long-term vision. Her story reminds us that Africa’s greatest resource has never been beneath its soil but within its people. For Fatima Diallo, building a company was never the destination. It was simply the beginning of building a legacy.
