Few ever reach the highest level. Fewer still discover that their greatest purpose begins after the final whistle. Clifford Mulenga knows both journeys. Celebrated as one of Zambia’s most gifted footballers of his generation, his career took him from the dusty football grounds of Lusaka to some of Africa’s biggest stadiums, earning continental recognition, league titles, and a place in Zambia’s historic football story. Yet behind the trophies, international appearances, and moments of glory was another journey; one marked by setbacks, difficult decisions, personal growth, and an unwavering determination to keep moving forward. Today, Mulenga is no longer measured only by the goals he scored or the matches he won. He is building something far more enduring: a new generation of footballers, coaches, and leaders equipped not only to succeed on the pitch, but to transform the game itself. Born on 5 August 1987 in Kabompo, North-Western Province, and raised in Lusaka, Zambia, Mulenga’s football journey began at the renowned Chiparamba Great Eagles Football Academy. Even as a young player, his pace, creativity, and technical brilliance set him apart, opening doors that would carry him from local pitches to the international stage.

RISING THROUGH AFRICAN AND EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
Mulenga’s professional career took him across Europe and Southern Africa, where he represented clubs in Sweden, South Africa, and Zambia. His career included spells with Örgryte IS, Bidvest Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, Ajax Cape Town, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Moroka Swallows, University of Pretoria, Jomo Cosmos, ZESCO United, Mbombela United, and Forest Rangers. Every transfer exposed him to new football cultures, different tactical systems, and higher levels of competition. Rather than simply adapting, Mulenga consistently demonstrated professionalism, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure, qualities that would define his career both on and off the pitch. His performances for the Zambia National Team established him as one of the country’s most exciting attacking players. In 2007, he was crowned CAF Young African Footballer of the Year, recognition that confirmed his status among Africa’s elite emerging talents and signalled the arrival of a player capable of competing on the continent’s biggest stages.

SUCCESS BEYOND THE SCOREBOARD
Mulenga’s career produced memorable achievements, including winning the 2015–16 Zambia Super League with ZESCO United and lifting the 2022–23 ABSA Cup with Forest Rangers. Yet one moment stands above all others. In 2012, Zambia achieved what many believed impossible by winning its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title. Mulenga was part of the historic squad that united a nation and inspired millions across Africa. The victory remains one of the greatest moments in Zambian sporting history. Ironically, while the tournament ended in national celebration, it also became one of the most difficult periods of his personal journey. Elite athletes often carry burdens hidden from public view, and Mulenga was no exception. Injuries, difficult decisions, public scrutiny, and personal disappointment forced him to confront challenges that statistics and trophies could never reveal.

WHEN ADVERSITY BECAME A TEACHER
For many athletes, setbacks become defining moments. For Clifford Mulenga, they became turning points. Rather than allowing disappointment to determine his future, he chose to rebuild his confidence, strengthen his character, and rediscover his purpose. Those difficult seasons taught him lessons that success alone could never provide.

“I’ve come to understand that success is never just about talent. Talent opens the door, but discipline, character, humility and resilience determine how long you stay inside.”

That philosophy became the foundation of the next chapter of his life, proving that true greatness is measured not by how often a person wins, but by how they respond when life becomes difficult.

REINVENTING HIMSELF BEYOND THE PITCH
Retirement marked neither the end of Mulenga’s influence nor the end of his ambition. Instead, it became the beginning of a new mission. Determined to contribute to football from a broader perspective, he earned CAF C and CAF D Coaching Licences and completed a Professional Diploma in Managing Director through the Barça Innovation Hub. These qualifications equipped him with modern leadership, coaching, and football management expertise, preparing him to influence the sport beyond playing. His leadership journey continued when he became FAZ Head of Youth Football Development, making him one of the first former Zambia National Team players to hold such a strategic position. He later served as Head of Football Operations and Team Manager at Aguila Stars Football Club, expanding his experience in football administration, governance, and organisational leadership.

GIVING BACK TO AFRICAN FOOTBALL
Today, Clifford Mulenga has become one of African football’s respected analysts and commentators. His insights have featured at major CAF competitions, including CHAN Algeria 2023, AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023, AFCON Morocco 2025, the CAF Champions League Final 2024, and the CAF and COSAFA African Schools Football Championship qualifiers. Yet broadcasting is only one part of his work. Away from television studios and football stadiums, Mulenga remains deeply committed to youth development, academy partnerships, talent identification, football governance, and strategic consulting. His passion is to create systems that give young African footballers opportunities that previous generations rarely enjoyed. He believes Africa possesses an abundance of talent. What it needs is stronger leadership, better coach education, sustainable football structures, and long-term investment in player development.

BUILDING A LEGACY BEYOND FOOTBALL
That vision forms the heart of his forthcoming book, The Storm That Never Brewed, a powerful reflection on his personal journey and a practical blueprint for transforming football development across Zambia and the African continent. Looking ahead, Mulenga’s ambitions extend far beyond personal recognition. He hopes to establish sustainable football academies, strengthen club structures, mentor future coaches and administrators, create international pathways for young African players, and contribute to policies that will strengthen football for generations to come. His vision reflects a leader who understands that lasting success is not measured by individual achievement alone but by the opportunities created for others.

A MESSAGE TO THE NEXT GENERATION
For young athletes pursuing their dreams, Clifford Mulenga offers advice shaped by experience rather than theory. “Dream boldly, but never believe talent alone is enough. Your character, your willingness to learn, your discipline, and the way you respond to adversity will ultimately define your journey. Every setback carries a lesson, and every lesson can become the foundation of your comeback.” Those words capture the essence of a remarkable career that has evolved from football excellence into purposeful leadership. For Clifford Mulenga, football has never been confined to ninety minutes on the pitch. It is a platform for leadership, service, mentorship, and nation building. His greatest contribution may not be the trophies he lifted, but the generation of players, coaches, and leaders he is now preparing to rise after him. That is the true mark of a champion not merely leaving the game with medals, but leaving it stronger than you found it.

Download The Full Copy: https://www.magzter.com/ZM/Arise-Africa-Magazine/Arise-Africa-Magazine/Business/2481885

Download The Full Copy: https://www.magzter.com/ZM/Arise-Africa-Magazine/Arise-Africa-Magazine/Business/2481885 Millions of young Africans dream of becoming professional footballers.
