Africa is becoming. Across the continent, a generation is challenging inherited limitations, building enterprises, advancing technology, transforming communities and redefining leadership. POWER TO BECOME asks a deeper question: What are you capable of becoming, and what could Africa become because of it? Featuring stories and perspectives from South Africa, Mauritius, Botswana, Kenya and Zambia, the edition brings together powerful reflections on identity, leadership, enterprise, purpose, resilience and personal growth. It challenges readers not simply to admire Africa’s potential, but to become the people capable of turning that potential into meaningful progress.

The central message of the edition is simple:
DO NOT MEASURE YOURSELF ONLY BY WHERE YOU ARE. MEASURE YOURSELF BY WHAT YOU ARE BECOMING.

BERRY HEART: THE POWER TO BECOME
From Creative Voice to African Builder of Brands, Ideas and Influence

Berry Heart’s journey is a story of continuous reinvention. Born Keotshepile Motseonageng, the Botswana entrepreneur has moved across poetry, music, performance, fashion, entrepreneurship, intellectual property, advocacy, authorship and public leadership. What began as a creative identity developed into Berry Heart Creations, alongside ventures including Baby Amari Clothing Apparel, Maison de Nala and BrandShield. Her evolution demonstrates how creativity can become commerce when combined with strategy, ownership and disciplined brand building. Her journey also took her into intellectual property, where she explored the protection and commercialisation of African creativity and indigenous knowledge. Her research into Etsha women’s handwoven baskets connects cultural heritage with intellectual property and economic value. Beyond enterprise, Berry Heart has used creative advocacy to address women’s empowerment, gender-based violence, children’s rights and social development. Her work in mentorship further reflects her belief that achievement becomes more meaningful when knowledge and opportunity are transferred to others. Her story eventually extends into authorship and public leadership through The Business of Influence: How to Turn Your Brand to Business, built around the principles of Influence. Integrity. Impact. Legacy. Her journey demonstrates that becoming does not mean abandoning previous identities. It means carrying what you have learned into new spaces and allowing every chapter to expand your capacity.

WHEN THE TITLE ENDS, WHO DO YOU BECOME?
Wakonyo Gicuhi Igeria and the Courage to Reinvent

For 34 years, Wakonyo Gicuhi Igeria built a distinguished career in law, corporate governance and banking. At 58, she made a defining decision: she walked away from the corporate title and began asking a deeper question, who are you when the title no longer introduces you?
A lawyer and advocate with extensive corporate experience, Wakonyo had served as Company Secretary and Head of Legal Services at Consolidated Bank of Kenya. Yet leaving corporate life opened another chapter of learning, coaching, mediation, governance, authorship and mentorship. Rather than retiring from learning, she expanded her professional capabilities through governance auditing, executive coaching, mediation and training. Through Grow House Foundation and later Liviters Company Limited, she has continued developing young adults, leaders and organisations through mentorship, governance, coaching and leadership development. Her story is ultimately about refusing to retire from becoming. The corporate leader became a coach, mediator, mentor, author and storyteller.
Her title changed. Her capacity did not.

WHEN REJECTION BECOMES THE ROAD TO PURPOSE
How Glorine Maloupe turned closed doors into a career of people development and youth empowerment

Glorine Maloupe had originally envisioned a career in financial analysis. Despite her qualifications in banking, finance and business administration, interview after interview ended without an offer. Instead of allowing rejection to define her future, she discovered an unexpected opportunity in human resources. That detour became a career in recruitment, payroll, employee relations, onboarding, outsourcing and organisational development. Yet her journey did not stop at professional success. Seeing young people facing unemployment, uncertainty and limited opportunities inspired her to establish Youth Ambassadors, a platform focused on mentorship, leadership development and connecting young people with opportunities. Her work also extends into mental health, gender equality, education and community empowerment.
Glorine’s story challenges the assumption that every closed door represents failure. Sometimes rejection redirects us toward abilities and purposes we would never have discovered by following the original plan.

THE ANGELINA GOVENDER PRINCIPLE
How to walk through what you did not choose

Life does not always ask permission before changing everything. For Angelina Govender, everything changed on 9 August 2024, when her eldest son, Trey Reese, suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury. What followed was emergency surgery, intensive care, rehabilitation, uncertainty and long periods away from home. Through that difficult season, Angelina found strength in faith, resilience and determination. She began writing between hospital rooms and hotel rooms in Greater Noida, India, eventually producing her memoir, Navigating the Storms of Life: All Within a Year Learning to Walk Through Faith. Her experience offers a framework for navigating circumstances we cannot control:
Accept what you cannot control. Hold on to what you believe. Keep moving when the journey changes. Turn pain into purpose. The Angelina Govender Principle is a reminder that we may not choose the storm, but we can choose how we walk through it.

MORE THAN A MAGAZINE
POWER TO BECOME is more than a collection of inspiring stories.
