DR. BRENDA BUKOWA: FROM PIONEERING SCHOLAR TO ONE OF AFRICA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL VOICES IN MEDIA AND LEADERSHIP.

Every generation produces individuals who redefine what is possible. They challenge convention, break barriers, and leave behind a legacy that inspires others to dream bigger. In Zambia’s media and academic landscape, Dr. Brenda Bukowa has become one of those defining figures. Respected as a scholar, researcher, media strategist, entrepreneur, and academic leader, Dr. Bukowa has spent nearly two decades shaping Zambia’s communication landscape. As the first woman in the country to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Media Studies, she has not only shattered a glass ceiling but expanded the possibilities for generations of young women aspiring to careers in academia, research, and leadership.

A JOURNEY DEFINED BY EXCELLENCE
Long before she became a department head or an internationally recognised scholar, Brenda Bukowa was a young woman driven by an insatiable desire to learn. That determination carried her from the University of Zambia to some of the world’s leading academic institutions. After earning a Bachelor of Mass Communication from the University of Zambia, she pursued a Master’s Degree in Media Studies at the University of Oslo in Norway, completed postgraduate studies at Ohio University in the United States, and later obtained a PhD in Culture, Media and Communication from the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. Each milestone broadened her perspective while strengthening her commitment to using communication as a tool for national development and social progress.

LEADING BEYOND THE LECTURE THEATRE
Today, Dr. Bukowa serves as Head of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Zambia, leading one of the country’s foremost centres for journalism and communication education. Her appointment reflects years of distinguished scholarship, institutional leadership, and public service. Earlier in her career, she made history as the University’s first female spokesperson and Head of Public Relations, becoming one of the institution’s most recognisable public voices. Whether managing institutional communication, mentoring future professionals, or shaping academic programmes, she has consistently demonstrated that leadership is measured not simply by position, but by influence.

RESEARCH THAT SHAPES SOCIETY
While many academics publish research, Dr. Bukowa has built a career ensuring that knowledge translates into real-world impact. Her work has informed national conversations on media policy, internet freedom, digital culture, children’s online safety, broadcast journalism, and the evolving influence of social media. She has contributed to Zambia’s Child Online Protection Strategy alongside UNICEF and ZICTA, trained journalists and election officials through the Electoral Commission of Zambia, advised the Media Institute of Southern Africa, and researched internet freedom with Freedom House. Her scholarship has consistently helped bridge the gap between academia, public policy, and national development. As digital technology continues to reshape African societies, Dr. Bukowa has remained at the forefront of understanding how communication can strengthen democracy, empower young people, and promote responsible citizenship.

AN AFRICAN SCHOLAR WITH A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
Dr. Bukowa’s expertise has taken her far beyond Zambia’s borders. From lecture theatres in Lusaka to universities and research institutions in Norway, Finland, South Africa, and the United States, she has taught, conducted research, and contributed to international conversations on media, democracy, and digital communication. Her work has earned prestigious fellowships and awards, including recognition from the Norwegian Government, the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Fritt Ord Foundation, reflecting a career marked by academic excellence and global respect. Despite her international profile, her commitment has remained firmly rooted in Africa, where she continues to strengthen institutions and inspire a new generation of communication professionals.

BUILDING BEYOND ACADEMIA
While many know Dr. Bukowa as an accomplished academic, another dimension of her leadership lies in entrepreneurship. As Managing Partner of Builders Village Limited and an investor with interests in construction, transport, agriculture, and microfinance, she has demonstrated that scholarship and enterprise can thrive together. Her career reflects a modern vision of African leadership, one in which knowledge creates opportunities not only in classrooms but also in boardrooms, businesses, and communities. Beyond business, she remains deeply committed to girl child education and youth empowerment, believing that investing in people is the most enduring form of nation building.

A LEGACY STILL UNFOLDING
History often remembers people for the offices they hold. Lasting legacies, however, are measured by the lives they influence. Dr. Brenda Bukowa’s journey is a testament to what becomes possible when determination meets discipline and vision is matched with purpose. From becoming Zambia’s first woman to earn a PhD in Media Studies to leading one of the country’s most respected academic departments, she has consistently demonstrated that barriers exist to be broken and excellence exists to be shared. In every lecture she delivers, every policy she helps shape, every young person she mentors, and every institution she strengthens, Dr. Bukowa continues to prove that education is more than a personal achievement. It is a national asset. Her legacy is not defined simply by becoming the first woman in Zambia to earn a PhD in Media Studies, but by ensuring she will never be the last.
